I installed Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks yesterday and so far love the new OS. In case you haven’t done so, you can open your Mac AppStore and find the free upgrade there. Yes, Mavericks is free for owners of compatible Apple devices. The download size is big though, more than 5 GB. Don’t forget to backup your computer before starting the upgrade.
Notable new things in Mavericks are:
Maps app
It’s kinda nice to finally able to access Maps app in desktop computer. Well, not that I will use this frequently, as I do feel Google Maps is better than Apple Maps and I can use it in any browser.
iBooks app
I got excited with this new app when I first heard about Mavericks. But when I actually have it in my desktop, I quickly realized some of its biggest flaws. Simply put… I HATE IT. I will discuss about iBooks later in a different post about getting our books back in iTunes on Mavericks.
iCloud keychain
It’s useful to remember passwords for not-important sites such as online forums, other people’s blogs etc. I never saved my credit card number in my electronic devices and will continue not doing so.
Multiple Displays
I don’t use multiple monitors so the new Multiple Displays improvement means nothing for me.
Improved Calendar
Calendar app is redesigned with iOS7 taste. It looks nice and so far I haven’t got any problem with it.
Improved Safari
I use Safari occasionally. My main browser is Firefox. The new Safari is a welcomed improvement, but I don’t think I will use it that much.
Improved Finder
Now we can create multiple tabs in Finder ! It’s about time, actually. I have tried playing with Mavericks’ Finder for a while and admit it’s better than Mountain Lion’s Finder. I don’t really like the concept of tagging to organize, but some people might like it, maybe.
Improved Notifications
Now this is a new feature that I love. I can now interact directly with notifications. I also see things that I missed while I was away when I’m about to login into my computer. Simple change, but really make better experience.
So speaking about listed new apps and features, Mavericks doesn’t sound very good for me. But is that all Mavericks has to offer?
Apparently, there are other improvements that make this latest version of OS X feels snappier and smoother for me. Apps are opened faster, even my Firefox browser with 20++ tabs. Plus my Macbook Pro battery lasts longer now.
Other apps that sync with iOS like Reminders, Notes and Messages still look the same (no design change). However, these apps in Mountain Lion behaved unstable after the launch of iOS 7 and the Mavericks versions bring back the stability. I still find it strange that they only redesign Calendar app to match iOS 7 design theme and leave the others with skeuomorphism design.
