belkin-wireless-travel-router

As the name suggest, this is a travel router. If we stay in a hotel that only provides wired Internet, we can create our own WiFi network using this device. In countries where almost every hotel offers WiFi Internet, this device might not be very useful. But there are countries where wired Internet in hotels is still the “normal” situation.

I didn’t actually plan to buy this. By chance I saw this nice little product on eBay, very low price and still no bid. I bid the lowest asked price and forgot about it in the next few days. I assumed someone would definitely outbid me. Apparently it didn’t. I was the one and only bidder.

Belkin Wireless Dual-Band Travel Router comes with a carrying case, a charger with 4 different plugs for travel, a micro USB cable, a network cable (RJ-45) and a quick setup guide. The default SSID name and password is printed on that guide. Once we are connected, we can use our laptop / tablet / smartphone to change the SSID name and password (and it’s recommended to do so). The control panel is accessible from browser, so it’s compatible with any device.

Router operates in dual-band mode 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Pre-configured security is 256 bit WPA2 encryption and 64/128 WEP encryption. Should be more than enough for occasional travel and casual use.

The 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks run separately. We need to assign different SSID name for each network. This is bit of let-down since I’m used to work with Apple Airport Extreme that can run in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz using the same SSID name and automatic selection of strongest signal. Well, but the price of this travel router is significantly cheaper, so I got not much to complain about.
