When we travel, we don’t always have the choice of what kind of desk we should work with. I have a Bluetooth mouse that I usually carry when traveling with a laptop. Sometimes I must work on a comfortable table with mouse-pad prepared. Some other times I need to work on a table with glass on top of it. Or even worse, sometimes I need to work on a glass table (without solid surface beneath). As you know, some mouse will work just fine on a mouse pad, but completely stop working on “improper” surface. And that’s how I realized the need of all-surface mouse.
First requirement, I need a mouse that will work in any surface, including pure glass. Second requirement, that mouse must have Bluetooth connection. Wireless mouse with USB receiver is not acceptable for me because my Macbook only has 2 USB ports, so each port is valuable. I don’t want to occupy that valuable port just for a mouse. Yes I can always use USB hub, but when traveling, there is one golden rule that the less we need to carry, the better right?
Logitech was my first candidate. I’m currently using Logitech M515 mouse for my desktop computer at home. Wireless and works at any surface. But this mouse need a USB receiver. So immediately it went off my candidate list. Some friends suggested me few other Logitech mouse models. But when I checked in their own website, they specifically state that the mouse will work on almost any surface, but not on glass. So far, I didn’t find any combination of Bluetooth and any surface in Logitech model.
Then I found this Kensington SureTrack mouse. It has Bluetooth connectivity, and it states about working on any surface, with specific mention in their website “even on glass”. So I decided to try.
My first impression, the mouse is rather big. Perhaps a little too big for my taste of “travel mouse”. It is powered by 2 AA battery, making the overall feel is rather heavy. On the bottom side there are an on/off switch and a pair button. The pair button is rather difficult to press, but I guess it serves the function to avoid accidental pressing, I guess.
The pairing process is easy. After connected, the mouse works smoothly. I have tested the mouse on glass (without solid surface beneath) and it works perfectly fine. So there is nothing wrong with functionality. It’s just slightly oversized for my liking. But I guess I can live with that. This mouse will surely be in my “to-bring-list” for work travels.
