My living room has a fan and a heater. Every winter I need to unpack the heater and store the fan. Every summer I need to do the other way around. After doing this for a few years, I started to look for a heater than can also work as normal fan.

dyson-am05-hot-coolI was aware about Dyson hot + cool fan heater for a while, but never gave it any serious thought due to its expensive price. Luckily, few months ago I happened to get a good offer to exchange points of my loyalty program (points worth approximately AUD $200), pay additional AUD $50 and get the unit that normally costs $600 here in Australia. It was a combination of Boxing Day sale, plus special coupon they sent to my email.

So here I am with a new hot + cool fan heater. Dyson AM05 is small and lightweight. I choose white color because it looks better in my living room. It has 80 degree oscillation, 10 degree tilt, 10 settings of fan speed, heater setting, LED display (for temperature and fan speed) and Air Multiplierâ„¢ technology. The heater is based on PTC ceramic heater.

The most noticeable review I read from many sources is that people either love this, or hate this. I guess with such a price tag, people does have the right to set higher expectations. One of the most common complain is noise. In my test, fan speeds 1-3 are reasonably quiet and sufficient for most casual use. Fan speeds 4-5 are more audible, but still not the point of disturbing comfort. 6 and above are admittedly noisy, but I think most other fans with similar speed would make audible noise too.

Heater is working based on target temperature. It’s still summer in Australia and I hadn’t tried this in winter yet. However, I did have cold summer days (unusual in summer, but kinda normal here in Melbourne) and tested the heater to be quite capable in warming up my tiny living room.

The ability to tilt the unit is more useful that what I initially expected. It allow us more flexible placement of the unit. For a family with small house, this is very valuable.

Finally, it’s small and lightweight unit is another strong point. I can easily move it around. Near the sofa when we watch TV, near my son’s play area when he’s playing. Extremely handy and easy to clean.

Overall, I am quite happy with this purchase. There is no chance I would ever spend its full price (AUD 600) for this unit, simply not worth it. But spending $50 plus some loyalty points that usually left unused for years anyway, that’s a nice bargain.
