ZaggKeys Folio is a case for iPad (available for iPad Air and iPad mini) with integrated Bluetooth keyboard. It’s different than the usual “case with Bluetooth keyboard” because ZaggKeys allows us to actually get the feel of using a laptop. When we open the case, we can freely adjust the viewing angle, without the need to supporting the iPad screen with something from behind.
I started my journey to find a good keyboard case for my iPad mini during my preparation for a work trip. My first candidate was Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio for iPad mini. It was a nice case, but it didn’t give me the feeling of using a laptop. My next candidate was ClamCase Pro for iPad mini. This one looks better, but I was worried that the metal-build will make it heavier. My reason of choosing iPad mini instead of iPad Air was the weight. So choosing a heavy case would probably defeat the purpose of portability. Plus, ClamCase Pro is rather pricey.
ZaggKeys Folio becomes my choice because it’s reasonably priced, and its keyboard has backlit ! I really love this feature, very useful when typing in low light. The case itself feels solid in my hand. It protects both sides of my iPad mini and has some sort of rubbery finish so it does not feel slippery. I ordered this from an online store, and the one I initially choose was white case with white keys. When I received my order, what they sent me was white case with grey keys. Luckily that online store also has physical store, so I exchanged it to the right model that I wanted in the first place: white case with white keys.
Strangely, the white case with white keys unit that I received has an issue with the micro-USB port for charging. I needed to hold my cable for it to charge properly. Any small movement would stop the charging process. So I went back to the store and exchanged it again. They no longer had white case with white keys model. So I settled with receiving white case with white keys. This time, I got a good unit.
ZaggKeys Folio case for iPad mini has Bluetooth keyboard with backlit. There are 3 brightness settings we can choose by pressing some key combinations. There are also 7 choices of colors. The process of pairing the keyboard to our iPad is reasonably easy. It only took few seconds to pair, and after that it automatically reconnects every-time I turn it on.
The keyboard is smaller than normal-sized keyboard. This is something to be expected, considering the small size of iPad mini. I can type with it comfortably, but I did make few mistakes in my first attempt of typing. Perhaps it takes some time to get used to it. According to Zagg, one full charge of the keyboard’s built-in battery could last up to 3 months. It is a good battery life, in my opinion.
Overall, ZaggKeys Folio case for iPad mini is a decent product. It’s not perfect, but it’s probably one of the best options in the market that is available today.
