Canon PowerShot S3 IS has 12x optical zoom and produce 6 MP images. This camera uses 4x AA batteries so we might want to get rechargeable batteries before taking this camera to a vacation.
Even though it’s rather heavy, this camera is comfortable to hold, giving us firm grip to take photos with steady hands. It has Image Stabilizer feature so we can still get good photo when our hands are a little shaky.
The 2″ display screen at the back allows quick control of picture-taking. Or we can still opt to use old fashioned way using viewfinder while saving a bit of energy. It’s worth to mention that viewfinder in S3 is an electronic viewfinder, so it freezes when we take photos. Interestingly, the display screen can be flipped to give it better protection when not in use, or allow us to take selfie.
The image quality produced by PowerShot S3 is good enough for my novice-user eyes. I’m not a serious photographer, so as long as my camera is easy to operate and can produce something that looks good, I’m happy.
The 12x optical zoom is a very good feature. I can take photos from quite a far and still get good images. I wish pocket camera can have this feature too.
PowerShot S3 allows us to record movies with sound at 15, 30 or 60 frames per second, up to 1 GB. It has a dedicated movie button to make it easier. The result is not bad, though we might better get ourselves a camcorder if movie is our main priority.
Overall, this is a good camera with nice results. It’s a bit on the heavy side, so I tend to use this on planned occasions. While I’m happy with this purchase, I might consider getting myself a pocket camera sometimes in the future.
