After more than 2 months of waiting, Android Lollipop is finally available for Nexus 7 (2013) LTE. Coming from iOS user who enjoy getting my software update right from the first day, this long waiting has been a huge disappointment for me. Not only because it’s long, I got pissed off because my tablet carries Nexus brand, one product line that was advertised as the one to get to enjoy fastest Android update. It got even worse because other models, including the same Nexus 7 (2013) without cellular already got the Lollipop update months ago.
Now, what are the changes after I got my Nexus 7 (2013) LTE upgraded to Android Lollipop 5.0.2? Well, the feeling is quite underwhelming. I already using Lollipop in my Nexus 5 for about 2 months, so installing Lollipop in Nexus 7 (2013) LTE feels like (finally) getting the same user experience. And that really does NOT worth the long waiting.
To be fair, Lollipop 5.0.2 for Nexus 7 (2013) LTE was released by Google at the end of January 2015 (over a week ago). Since I was busy with other things, I finally got time to do OS update today and I feel the need to write my rant here.
Just like my experience with Nexus 5, I like the bright theme in Lollipop’s default launcher. With more screen space, they should have made better notification center, like displaying the quick control for WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, etc side by side with notifications without the need of additional tap. But they choose to borrow the design taste from smaller smartphone screen and implement it in tablet.
Somehow, even after Lollipop upgrade, I still get the feeling that my Nexus tablet is just an enlarged Android phone. So far I haven’t noticed anything significant from the core Android OS to give user good tablet experience by using larger screen effectively. So, I guess this is the end of my experiment with Nexus 7 (2013). I will keep Nexus 5 as my Android device because I’m happy with it, but I decide to kick this Nexus 7 (2013) tablet out of my collection in the near future.
