As the name suggests, Gear4 HomeCharger Dual is a wall charger with 2 USB ports. Honestly, I did not need any more wall charger when I bought this. I had enough at home. However, seeing a branded dual ports USB charger that promises separate outputs for AUD 9 (approx USD 6.58) was an offer I could not refuse. It is always a good idea to have extra charger anyway.
Most cheap chargers that offers dual USB ports do not actually have 2 sets of components inside. If the promise is 2A charger, it can actually deliver 2A from a USB port as long as the other port is not used. When both ports are used, the electricity current is divided. It could be 1A for each port, or other combination depending on the types of devices that is being charged.
I tested Gear4 HomeCharger dual using Legion Meter digital multimeter for USB charging. I use the charger to charge iPad mini 2 and iPhone 6. Turned out, while charging 2 devices simultaneously, it can still deliver around 1.4A of juice to my iPad mini 2 (this is actually the usual current delivered by original Apple charger). Interestingly, I tried to switch the port source (the 1A port is attached to iPad mini 2 and the 2.1A port is attached to iPhone 6) and the current readings are still the same. Somehow, the 1A port is capable to deliver 1.4A to my iPad mini 2 while the 2.1A port delivers 1A to my iPhone 6.
As a plus point, this charger has a nice and compact design with the ports accessible from the top. This is a good thing when we have cramped power board. The overall build quality of this charger is very decent. Definitely much better than those shady chargers with super cheap prices.
