Facebook thinks we all like to see auto-play videos in our news feed. So they make it the default setting that every video we currently see in our screen will get automatically played, even though (thankfully) with muted audio. Some people are happy to see this feature. Some are annoyed. Some others are worried that the auto-play videos will consume a lot of their mobile data allowance.
There is actually a simple way to turn off automatic video play in Facebook news feed.
For desktop computer (in browser), what you need to do is clicking on the Settings menu (usually located on the upper right, but Facebook can change this location anytime). When Settings screen is loaded, find a sub-menu called Videos. There you can find the setting for auto-play video.
For iOS devices (iPhone and iPad), you need to open Facebook app, tap on the More icon, scroll down to find Settings menu, choose Account Settings. In the Settings screen, find and tap a sub-menu called Videos and Photos. There, you can find the setting for auto-play video. You can choose to turn it on using WiFi and Cellular data, or only when using WiFi, or turn it off completely.
For Android devices, you need to open Facebook app, tap the More icon, scroll down to find App Settings, tap on Videos play automatically. Similar to iOS setting, you can choose to turn it on, WiFi only or completely off.
This quick guide is tested using the web version of Facebook (accessed on 28 Sep 2015), Facebook app version 39.1 for iPhone and Facebook app version 47.0.0.25.125 for Android.
