android-5-0-lollipop

It’s official, Android 5.0 is named lollipop. Google’s latest mobile operating system will be available first in Nexus devices, followed by some lucky models from other manufacturers later. So what’s new from Android 5.0? It’s packed with some latest features like picking up where we left off between Android devices, better touch interaction, respond to notifications directly from lock-screen, more settings related to notifications, battery saver feature and guest user mode. The complete list of new features can be obtained from this link.

With the announcement of Android 5.0, we also get a new Nexus device: Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. Nexus 6 is a huge smartphone with 5.96 inches screen and 1440×2560 display (493 ppi). That’s even larger than iPhone 6 Plus. The battery is 3.220 mAh. It is packed with 13MP rear-facing with optical image stabilization, plus the standard 2MP front camera. The CPU is Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Quad Core 2.7 GHz and the GPU is Adreno 420. Nexus 6 is available in 32 GB or 64 GB internal memory.

Personally, I have waited for Nexus 6 for few months. However, I didn’t expect it to be so huge. I choose the 4.7″ model iPhone 6 because I don’t like the huge size of iPhone 6 Plus, and now the new Nexus I was expecting to get is even bigger. I really really don’t understand this stupid race of making bigger screen for phones. It’s getting ridiculous. Now I’m no longer sure if I will still get Nexus 6 or not. The size is a serious turn-off for me. Perhaps I should consider getting last year’s Nexus 5 instead.

Next we have Nexus 9, a tablet with 8.9 inches screen. More normal size for a tablet, I would say. The battery is huge at 6,700 mAh. This tablet is powered by 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor 2.3 GHz CPU and 192-core Kepler GPU. The choice of internal storage is 16 GB or 32 GB. Its camera is “only” 8MP (rear) and 1.6MP (front).

Last, we have Nexus Player. It’s Nexus attempt to take on Apple TV. So far I love how it looks. It’s small and sleek. It’s equipped with a nice remote with voice search and a gamepad. The idea is, we can install Android apps into our big TV screen, watch movies and play games on it. The best part is probably the voice search. We don’t need to categorize our contents anymore. A simple voice search will help us to find what we’re looking for. And we need to admit, Google is the world’s best in searching technology.

Naturally, Nexus Player is capable to use some of the most popular entertainment apps like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus and so much more. The technical specs is actually not bad. Nexus Player is powered by 1.8GHz Quad Core Intel Atom and 802.11ac WiFi. Interestingly, this device is announced exactly the day before Apple’s event. And I strongly suspect that Apple will announce a new Apple TV tomorrow. Let’s wait and see how these two giant companies will change our TV.
