Sony SRS-BTV5 is a Bluetooth speaker with the shape of a small ball (or egg-shaped if you would). The form factor is super compact, and it comes with carrying pouch, making it easy to carry it anywhere. This speaker is sold for $79 in Australia and it never caught my attention because that price is just way above my radar for such a tiny speaker. Luckily, last weekend I got an email promo with this speaker on sale for $19. Since the price is good and it’s a Sony speaker, I decided to give it a try.
Technical-wise, Sony SRS-BTV5 has built-in battery (rechargeable by micro-USB), hands-free function and NFC. According to Sony, the built-in battery lasts for 5 hours of music playing. It packs Bluetooth 3.0 and supports A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles. The weight is approximately 135g and (as mentioned before) it comes with a nice-looking carrying pouch. The power output is rated at 1.2W. There’s also a stereo jack input for devices without Bluetooth connectivity.
As expected from a product with normally-premium price, Sony SRS-BTV5 comes in a rather impressive packaging. The product itself, is tiny, measuring less than 7 cm height. There are 3 buttons on its body (volume up, volume down and call button). There is a power switch at the bottom. Sliding right will toggle the power on/off. Switching left will turn off the NFC standby.
The design of this tiny speaker allows 360° sound output, which is good for a room with multiple people. Pairing it with my devices are easy. It can stream music within around 5m distance without much problem.
Now, the most important part of a speaker: the sound quality. Considering the super compact form-factor, I guess it’s only natural that this speaker does not deliver strong bass. However, I can turn up the volume loud enough for middle-sized room. On top of that, the sound remain solid at medium-high volume. Quite impressive for a speaker of that size, I would say.
Overall, I’m quite happy with this purchase. Especially because of the good price I got. The speaker is a solid product for portability. I can imagine to simply pack this into our luggage before traveling and have nice music in hotel room.
