Why would we need a separate device to print sticker labels while most modern computers with proper printer can print any text on various materials? Well, it is true that most modern computer can print on various materials. However, a dedicated device would allow simpler use. My desktop printer can print photo quality using photo papers. However, it can took me a long time to test and adjust the margins, the zoom level and many other settings before I finally get it right. If I print photos everyday, I can easily use the same setting the next day. However, when the need of printing photo is probably about once every few weeks or months, basically I always need to redo the readjustment process before every session of photo printing. The same problem would apply to sticker labels if I try to print them using desktop printer.

brother-p-touch-pt-h105Brothers P-Touch H105 is a handy device capable to print sticker labels from 3.5 to 12 mm width. The sticker labels are sold separately in various options. We can get the normal sticker labels with our selected color combinations, or we can get special labels like the one we can permanently attach to clothing, etc. Typical TZe tapes (the sticker label refill) is 8 m long. We get a standard “starter” tape of 4 m when we initially purchase the P-Touch device.

H105 has built-in display for us to type the text we want to print. We can type up to 2 lines of text. We can choose our font size. We can make our text bold, italics, outlined, shadowed or we can use other text styles. We can even choose from one of the pre-defined deco modes, frame keys or auto designs. We also have the selection of many special symbol characters. In my personal experience, those fancy stuffs are just extra and we would rarely need to use them.

One thing I don’t really like from P-Touch H105 is their method of cutting the sticker. Their “normal margin” leaves long unused tape before and after our printing and I generally have to cut both sides using scissors. We can choose “half” or “narrow” margin, but it would only shorten the margin after our text. The margin before our text remains unnecessarily long. Since replacement tape is measured by length (8 m), I feel like this is their method to “cheat” on us so we must buy new cartridge faster.

Other than the margin issue, P-Touch H105 is generally easy to use. Menus to change text effects are a bit inconsistent. User interface is not the best I’ve seen, but it does the job well after we get used to it.
