python-cords-02Python Cords is a simple accessory to protect our MagSafe charger. One of the most common problem of MagSafe is broken cords, especially at the place where the soft rubber cord attaches to the hard plastic shell of the power supply. There are some other products trying to solve the same problem. I particularly like this one because the concept is very simple, and the usefulness is believable. I backed this Kickstarter project back in April 2014. Finally received the unit few days ago.

There are two color options of Python Cords: black and white. Naturally I choose white, because MagSafe charger is white. Black version is probably more interesting for people with laptops from other brand. The Kickstarter page mentions the material as “special elastomer”. Not really sure what it is, but to me it feels like a tough rubber. Since the basic idea here is to protect the most critical stress point of our cable, I think this material could do its job reasonably well.

python-cords-01Within the first few seconds of opening the box, I encountered my first problem: how to attach this “protector” to my MagSafe? After a little bit of trial and error, I finally figured out that I need to start from the magnetic end first. Putting the magnetic head of MagSafe 2 was slightly more difficult than the video they provide in Kickstarter. They use MagSafe 1, the magnetic head is smaller.

Anyway, I managed to attach Python Cords to my MagSafe 2 Power Adapter (for MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display). The material picks up a little bit of dust, which a bit disappointing, but not really a major issue. Currently there is no way to actually measure the effectiveness of this product in protecting my MagSafe. Only time can tell.

edit 15 Nov 2014: the creator of Python Cords just contacted me with information that this accessory is made from silicone.
