Many models of Sony Cyber-shot camera uses NP-BX1 battery. From Sony website, I can make list of DSC-HX50V, DSC-HX60V, DSC-HX300, DSC-RX100, DSC-RX100M2, DSC-RX1, DSC-RX1R and DSC-WX350. Some video camera like HDR-MV1 and HDR-AS100VR and HDR-AS30VPK also use NP-BX1. I believe this list would get longer in the future when new models use the same battery.

My DSC-WX350 does not come with an external battery charger. Instead, I have to charge my battery while it’s in the camera using the included wall charger with micro-USB cable. Since I don’t like the idea of charging my battery inside a camera, I decided to search for an external charger.

First I browsed eBay and found so many third party chargers. I’m well aware that some of those products might not even be safe for the battery, or even to my general safety. But it’s still a good place to start learning about my options.

After some research, I was about to make a purchase. Then suddenly I decided to have a look at Sony website to check whether Sony itself has a product that I need. I’m so glad I did the check. In its website, Sony offers “Accessory Kit” ACC-TRDCX, which basically a bundle of two products: a travel charger BC-DCX and NP-BX1 battery. The price is obviously more expensive that third party chargers from eBay, but I got a first-party charger that looks great, and a genuine backup battery. So I decided to get them.

BC-DCX is a very compact charger. It measures 7 cm x 3.6 cm x 1.4 cm and weighs only 16 g. It can easily slip into the smallest travel bag and it doubles as a “case” to store the backup battery while not in use.

To charge using BC-DCX, we need to have a micro-USB cable connected to a power source (can be a wall charger, power-bank or computer). The top side of BC-DCX is a slider. Opening the slide will allow us to put in NP-BX1 battery inside. Use the slide again to close and protect the battery, and we can start charging by plugging the micro-USB cable. There’s a LED indicator to tell us when the charging process is completed.

There’s not much to say about a simple charger, I just feel like writing about this because I’m really impressed with how compact it is.
